The finish is a traditional 19th century fuming where the piece is placed in a tent for three days and exposed to ammonia. The chemical reaction changes the tannins in the oak, giving the finish a warm amber color and letting the ray flakes pop. Three coats of shellac, boiled linseed oil, and polyurethane are then applied to give it luster and then finished with a dark paste wax.
